Restoring Digital Balance - Impact on Brain Development
As youth develop, their brain undergoes severe changes that don't stop until they become 25 years old. This means that it is extremely easy for things to affect our brains, especially digital things. When you scroll or play video games, you perform a fast feedback activity which forces your brain to comprehend things at a high level. Although this might seem good at first, fast feedback activities cause your brain to become used to constant stimulation, so normal things don't become as exciting anymore. This lowers the brain's attention span and ability to focus.
Furthermore, these fast-feedback activities cause a rush of unearned dopamine. Dopamine, or the pleasure chemical, used to come after hard work, but with the ease of the internet, people can feel pleasure without working hard. This causes the brain to become used to this pleasure and leads to motivational and productivity atrophy. As a result, even simple things become a hassle.
